North Otago Heritage Trip
1 Day Heritage Trip

Our day starts at the Dunedin Railway Station where we head north to Shag Point to view the relics of an underwater coal mine and sea the local seal population basking on the rocks. If our timing is right, we may also see the endangered yellow-eyed penguin, and if you look hard enough, you may even see some whales off shore.
From here we move down on to the sands and surf of the Pacific Ocean to walk amongst the famous Moeraki Boulders which were originally formed about 65 million years ago, and are now being uncovered for the world to see.
A short drive takes us through the best preserved Victorian town in New Zealand – Oamaru. Soak up the unique atmosphere of its Historic Precinct, arguably one of the country’s most impressive streetscapes. Experience the important role Oamaru played in the economic development of New Zealand.
Here, time permitting, we can:
- Visit the historic Totara Estate and see farm life from the early 1900’s
- Have lunch in the historic precinct and check out the gorgeous Oamaru whitestone buildings in their original setting
- Visit the blue penguin colony and fall in love with the world’s smallest penguins
- See how the famous Whitestone cheese is made and taste the results
