Catlin's Falls Hector's Dolphin

There’s something for everybody on this trip – bush walks, wildlife, spectacular scenery or just poking around as we get a taste of One of New Zealand’s unspoilt areas.

Day 1 has us departing for Balclutha, then on to the Nuggets where we might get to see fur seals, elephant seals, Hooker sealions and a variety of bird-life, including the rare yellow eyed penguin. It’s lunch at Owaka, and check into your hotel while we are there, then on to explore Pounawea, Jack’s Blowhole and the Purakaunui Falls in the afternoon, before heading back to Owaka for a well earned rest.

Day 2 has us departing via the Matai Falls to Papatowai and Lake Wilkie, anddepending on the tide, exploring the trulymagnificant Cathedral Caves. After a light lunch, we move on to the Waikawaharbour and museum, Porpoise Bay, where wemay see the local Hector’s dolphin population, and then Curio Bay, for a view of one of the world’s finest examples of a fossilised forest. We finish our day by driving through the fertile farmland of Southland to Bluff, where we catch our ferry for the 60 minute trip to Stewart Island, for the first of our two nights on the island. For those that prefer, 20 minute flights are also available from Invercargill airport at an extra cost.

Day 3 is at your leisure, but there are any number of activities to try out, from self drive tours in the island’s fleet of rental vehicles, to relaxing walks around Oban and Halfmoon Bay, to fishing trips or visits to the salmon farms in Paterson’s Inlet, to visits to the Ulva Island wildlife sanctuary, to superb underwater viewing of the crystal clear waters surrounding the island in a semi-submersible.

Day 4 has a leisurley awakening before we stroll down to the ferry for a late morning crossing back to Bluff. Lunch is at the Invercargill museum where you will get to see, amongst other things, New Zealand’s best collection of living tuatara. After a stroll around Invercargill, it’s back on the Big Limo for a drive through Southland and home to Dunedin.
